Sample Language for Letter to Governor Newsom, 9/18/19
The email address for sending the governor letters that comment on legislation is: [email protected]. It is preferable that you write a letter in your own words. Nevertheless, these are the messages Governor Newsom needs to hear:
Dear Governor Newsom.
For years, our family has watched has the opioid crisis has worsened, and addicts from across the country have come to live in our neighborhoods under the guise of “non-medical” recovery. For the most part, this has been a fraud. They have been lured with free, one-way plane tickets and false advertising, led to believe they will have medical services. They have been given housing without a contract, which allows them to be unceremoniously evicted. Their for-profit treatment programs—certified by the state of California— have defrauded them of services they need and intentionally engaged in insurance fraud, all without medical care. And yet, California has done nothing to provide them the most basic consumer protections. The state has almost no laws on the books District Attorneys can use against these businesses. The Insurance Commissioner’s office is overwhelmed. DHCS refuses to address deaths affiliated with programs. Everywhere, addicts who entered California’s for-profit, non-medical treatment can now be found on the streets.
As the opioid and homelessness crises deepened, Governor Brown refused to lead. It is time to act with decency; you have the opportunity to prevent costly fraud and save lives. Please sign SB 589, AB 919, AB 920 and AB 290 into law.
