Subject: Support AB 448
Dear Committee Staff,
Our family is writing to you today in support of AB 448. Every year, well intentioned families send their minors across the country to for-profit behavioral health treatment in California, trusting without seeing that the state has vetted outstanding programs and facilities. Why else would they be allowed to advertise on the internet? AB 448 would require that a legal guardian or parent reside in California for the duration of a youth's treatment, which would protect the youth from unsavory operators who tell parents one thing but do something different. It would clarify that operators, parents and even the Department of Social Services cannot deny these youth communication with their loved ones, as is a common practice. Likewise, their access to footwear could not be denied by operators attempting to prevent them from running away. We ask that you vote in favor of AB 448 which will end violations of youth rights and ensure parents stay involved in their child's healthcare.
Thank you.
